The up, the down and the apathetic
Sep. 19th, 2002 07:13 pmY'know... I like that film. I can't say as I was like... stupendously blown away by it or anything, but Signs was actually pretty cool.
I'm not gonna' say it's the scariest thing I've ever seen cause there are too many moments that are far too funny to make it truly terrifying, but I LIKED it, in a huggable middle-aged Mel Gibson kind of a way.
It did, however, have one of the only moments in film that has ever actually made me really jump. I'm not, by nature, usually taken in to the suspence of things like that, usually cause you just KNOW it's coming, but the flailing hand did garner an "aagh-holy-shit" full-body twitch.
The aliens were... a little *eh* and I'll agree with Kat's observation that they sounded like deranged dolphins, furthering the Australian Males/aquatic mamals language theory, but the suspense was very well managed.
Nicely claustrophobic, if you get my meaning.
Deeper and deeper and you really do start to wonder how the hell they're going to get out of it, it's just a shame that the invasion's end was so... I don't know if "contrived" is the right word, but it seems too abrupt. Like suddenly they're in mortal peril and then, actually, no, they're not.
The whole deal with his wife's final words was more than a little *blah* as plot devices go, but overall I definitely enjoyed it.
Charlie and Rachael were, unsurprisingly, desperately hopeful that the kid would snuff it.
Personally I think it coulda' gone either way and worked, though the ever-so-slightly-sappy conclusion they came to was no great shocker.
In conclusion... go see. It probably loses a fair old amount in the translation from big to little screen, but if you missed it at the cinema, rent the DVD or something.
And watch it in the dark, it'll aid the atmosphere.
The opening titles seem a little bit B-movie but get past it, and as long as you can stop thinking Children of the Corn for the first 10 minutes or so, you'll get sucked in just fine. ^__^
Oh, and you can play "spot the boom" in one scene too. See if you can find it.
On more conventional notes, JR said he had a phone call from Safeways saying that they've changed my shift tomorrow from a 6am start to a 7:15 start. I'm really fricking confused cause the rota in the canteen said I had an 8am start and there's no buggering way in hell I'm starting at 7:15 in the morning. They can get knotted. I'll just say I never got the message and was going by the main rota as opposed to the ammended one in the office that I "Hadn't seen".
Yes, for I hate my job and no longer give a shit.
And I really don't want to go to work in the morning. Not at all. Not even in the slightest. The only reason I am going is so I can take them my P45 so they'll stop sucking off damned tax from everything I earn.
*wails* I don't wanna' GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! \ToT/
