damn, knew I shoulda' placed that bet...
Aug. 10th, 2003 09:42 pmMan, I can't believe it finally got up to 100 degrees in London today. Finally finally broken the record for the hottest summer ever.
From Yahoo News: Temperatures have climbed to record levels in sweltering Britain as the mercury hit 100.8 degrees Fahrenheit (38.1 Celsius), leaving bookmakers facing a hefty payout on bets that the 100 F mark would be topped.
Registered at Gravesend, Kent today, the new record beat the previous hottest day of 37.1 C (98.7 F), set in Cheltenham in 1990.
Londoners baked in heat that reached 37.9 C, measured at Heathrow Airport this afternoon
Wow, I would call that "not a good day to be stuck at the airport".
As my sweetie bus driver said yesterday though "Whatever happened to summers that never really got above 25C?"
Well, that's a darned good question. I remember all the summers of my childhood being around the 25C mark. Over the past few years they've edged up and up, but still not usually past 32, 33... This on the other hand just ain't freaking right for this country. I know we're supposed to be coming out of a mini ice-age and all that crap but c'mon... if this were a comic book we'd have a bunch of people in spandex out there right now hunting down an insane scientist hell bent on controlling the weather with a really big retro-looking "laser".
OK, now I have a sudden urge to watch Austin Powers...
