cinema stuff
Aug. 3rd, 2003 08:46 pmSo the boywonder and I finally got around to catching up with some of the movies we'd not gotten around to watching. This evening we took in both Hulk and Bruce Almighty, as they're both slated to vanish from the local cinema this week.
Hulk was... not as good as I hoped. I mean, it was good... the characters were good and the story was good and the acting was excellent but yeGODS it was ponderous. I found myself clockwatching after a while, which is something I very rarely do during a movie any more.
I fear it's an Ang Lee thing though, I was bored out of my mind for 90% of Crouching Tiger, and I generally got the feeling that they could have made this movie shorter, just by making people walk and talk a teeeeny bit faster. it was like listening to a record on 33 when it should be a 45. I just wanted to attach a couple of electrodes to Eric Bana's really rather lovely buttocks and zap him to make things move faster.
That said though, the action was fun, and Bana's moonlight naked butt moment was well worth the effort of sitting through the rest ;p
On the downside, that split screen thing was annoying. It (sadly) took me a while to realise it was supposed to be a comic panel style homage, but that didn't stop it seeming oddly invasive to me. Coulda' lived without that I think.
Highlights of the movie IMHO... Eric Bana got naked, Eric Bana got wet, Eric Bana got tied to a chair (Can you tell I think he has a nice body? ;p I don't much care for the rest of him, but he has a nice bod), Stan Lee got a speaking part (heeeee), lots of things got blown up, there was a big tank full of water that made me think of Weapon X, and that darned wooden cabin.
I swear, every time I saw that wooden cabin I expected it to have Logan and and Silver Fox carved into an upright...
So we came out of Hulk and went directly into Bruce Almighty. (Timed that rather well, I think).
I enjoyed BA more than I did Hulk (didn't look at my watch once) though I suppose it could be debated as to which was a "better" film.
As far as Carey movies go, it was better than most but not as good as the Truman Show, which is still probably the best movie he's ever made.
But, it was foofy, frolicky and fun. An interesting twist on a plot device I'm sure I've seen elsewhere and, while not exactly brain food, it passed an entertaining enough couple of hours.
It was a good choice for a second feature, I don't think I would have made it all the way through Hulk without getting reeeeeally bored. ;p
