The reason for the scanner-hating
Jul. 4th, 2003 08:16 pmOK, so I mentioned before that I was feeling randomly like sketching. You'll probably have guessed from the earlier post that I did indeed sketch and I had to battle recalcitrent hardware to actually show anyone.
I think I remember reading in someone's journal not too long ago (It might have been
stir_of_echos but I'm not completely certain) that they were thinking of scanning their next sketch bit-by-bit. I thought it was a kinda' nifty idea so, though it's not a particularly GOOD sketch, I figured, what the hey.
So without further ado, the blow by blow account of the last hour and a half.
First off... personally I like to find a picture and remove the colour before I print it out. It makes my life easier. I have been known to make things print out only showing the blue pigment before now. I find it tends to illustrate the shading better thus making me have to think LESS, but this time I did just plain ol B&W.
From that I start out with the basic outline. This came out really REALLY faint on the scan, so I had to diddle with the contrast otherwise it'd just be a big block of white...
*kicks scanner*

Started shading in the eyes. I usually start with mouths and work up but, for some reason but this time I did eyes and worked down.

Moved on to nose, lips and jaw, Started adding in the stubble which really shows up crappily on this scan... *bitches more* ;)

Ears, neck etc always end up last. This is also the point where I screamed "Fuck, I hate drawing hair! Why the hell did I pick this damn picture??!"
I mean I love the bed-head freshy tousled look *purrs* but bugger me it's a pain in the arse to draw...

Aaand finally... (well sort of finally... this time tomorrow I'll be thinkering more with it, but *eh*...)
So, "And finally..." finished the hair, smoothed out a few rough patches that didn't work so well and generally rounded the last of it out.

I say "this time tomorrow" I actually really mean "In about 5 minutes". I'm seeing stuff I don't like and want to change already. -_-;;
Man I need to start being less critical. It was only an hour and a bit sketch... Just about as long as it takes to listen to Use Your Illusion, so that boarders on "lightening" for me. I've been known to spend 4 hours + and come out with less.
*slaps self*
OK, I'm done being overly critical... really I am.
(*screams* I'M INSECURE, DAMNIT!)
I am, however, thinking I really need to buy a better scanner. ;p

I am just blown away by your talent, Lady T. Is there nothing you can't do?

Oh, I don't know. It looks like you eventually got it to work well enough. The sketches look great.
And thanks for the nice words too. I tend to reserve the right to do the temperamental artist thing as wolvinatrix will attest, I'm sure, so it means a lot. ^__^
Hee! Well, as a person who can't draw a straight line without a ruler and eraser (to fix mistakes), I'm dang impressed with your artistic talent.
