So, I am back, I have seen the Matrix, and it must be said I was rather pleasantly surprised.
I have to confess, I was pretty much expecting to be somewhat dissapointed, which in hindsight was a good thing because I went in with really rather low expectations and came out feeling like, actually... It was pretty damn good.
Worth the money, a solid summer popcorn flight of fancy and I really REALLY like Neo's coat...

Which kinda' looks like he swiped it off a Catholic priest, a point that I only find ever so slightly disturbing when I stop and think about it too much. ;)

Must confess though, I was sort of half expecting Neo to manifest some kind of powers out in the real world, but yup, it is occasionally nice to be proven right about something.
I'm usually way off the mark.

Overall I think I enjoyed it more than the first one. Cause let's face it, the first one would knock your socks off quite happily, but it never really made you raise much of a smile.
This one was funnier and, at least I thought, slightly more engaging than the last. It's less a sequel, more a new story set in the same universe.
For the pedants among you, there's a difference.
Some critics have complained about the slow-ish start and the ever so slightly ponderous dialogue in the first half hour or so. Well ok, it's not exactly action-packed but it's nowhere near as chronic as Attack of the Clones, so if you sat through that this will be a walk in the park.

The first Matrix was ground-breaking in its premise. Naturally, as a sequel, this lacks that element as it was already covered in the first story. It is, however, an entertaining enough way to spend a couple of hours.

Despite all that though, what I really want to do now is go see X-men 2 again. ;)

[livejournal.com profile] khakigrrl, I know you were wondering whether to see it or not and, now that I actually HAVE seen it I can finally offer some form of relevant opinion. (Though whether you chose to take it or not is totally up to you) ^__^

If you're worried about graphic sex then you get to see a bit of bare thigh and a flash of some nakey Keanu butt. You get a flash or two of nipple from the Zion dancers too but really that's about it. It's not exactly relevant to the plot so you could close your eyes till the music stops and not really miss anything, but it is quite a nice moment between Neo and Trinity. There's a not-so-subtle referance here and there but nothing worse than you'll see on TV, and a woman eating aphrodesiac chocolate cake. But she excuses herself before you get anything more than a strangely silly-looking CGI wire model with a glowing wooshy patch.
Which I have to say actually made me laugh more than anything.

As to violence, well there's blood here and there a fair old amount, but it's more of the "dramatic splatter across the glass" variety than the "graphic splodgy mess exploding out of someone's chest" variety. I didn't see anything that provoked an "ewww" reaction in the audience at any rate, so unless you're easily squicked then it'd probably be ok.

I'd say that if you enjoyed the first one then go and see it. If you were just *eh* on the first one then wait till the DVD and you can fast-forward if you want to. But as a continuation of the story then it's worth a look. Nakey Keanu-butts and all.

Thank you so much for the R-related review. It's nice of you to think of me, and what you have to say does make me pause for reconsideration.

With some R movies that I'm dying to see, but know they're a bit too adult for me, I get the novelization instead. Somehow graphic violence seems less graphic when it's mentioned rather than viewed in detail, at least to me. Also, it's easier to skip over the naughty bits.

For the Matrix II, however, I'm really not desperately dying to see it. I was interested before I heard it was R, but not so much anymore. I think I'll just wait to rent it. There's just something about a small screen and the ability to fast-forward or mute that makes it easier to watch some movies.

*Nods* You'll probably notice the CGI less on small-screen too. :D
