May 16, 2003 -- THE producers of the Tony Awards have asked "X- Men" star Hugh Jackman to host this year's telecast, theater sources told The Post yesterday.
Jackman's not expected to accept, the sources said, but he will probably appear on the telecast as a presenter and may even perform.
The typical "X-Men" fan doesn't know this, but Jackman is one of the musical theater's most sought-after leading men.
He won acclaim as Curly in the London production of "Oklahoma!" several years ago. But he didn't come with the production to Broadway, which is one reason why it didn't fare as well here as it did there.
A year ago, Broadway's top theater owners and producers were raving about his performance as the late pop singer Peter Allen in a workshop production of "The Boy From Oz."
Jackman will make his Broadway debut in the fall at the Imperial Theatre in that musical, which is expected to be one of next season's major hits.
There was talk this week that Jackman would perform a number from "The Boy From Oz" on the telecast, but the show's producers decided that, out of context, a Peter Allen song performed by a guy doing a Peter Allen imitation might baffle viewers.
[LT's Note: Only because average viewers are evidenly considered to be really, really dumb... it's called an explanatory introduction, people, you know how to use one I'm sure]
So Jackman will sing a Broadway standard - possibly something from "Oklahoma!"
As part of his deal to appear on the Tonys, however, Jackman will be given plenty of time to plug "The Boy From Oz," for which tickets are already on sale.
Tony producers, meanwhile, are still trying to find a host.

Had that weird brain synergy thing going on again today. It's always weird when that happens.
Wandered around work and all freaking morning I had Sunset Boulevard stuck in my head. And it's been God alone knows how long since I listened to it but suddenly *blip* there it was.
Mentioned it to Eek this evening and not only did we think the exact same thing about Hugh and the Tonys (Please not more Oklahoma, can we get a lil' BFO or Boulevard or even a spot of Phantom just to ring the changes) but she mentioned that she'd been listening to Boulevard on loop all the evening before while coding the website.
With the way Kat and I tend to have the exact same thought at the exact same time it's become clear to me that I don't actually have a personality of my own, my brain just absorbs other people's instead. :p

Date: 2003-05-16 03:09 pm (UTC)Ooooh, I like all three of those suggestions. Or, hey, maybe he could sing Soliloquy from Carousel. People were raving about how well he handled that difficult song. Or, maybe just a compilation of Broadway songs (like all Rodgers and Hammerstein, or something) so he can show his vocal range. I soooooo hope he doesn't do Oklahoma or B&B. I already have them on CD and/or video.

He did do the Soliloquy really rather well though, it must be said. But it's a tricky one to perform and not the kind of event you'd want to screw up on so I can see how there could be reluctance to do that again. :p
I wait with eager anticipation to see what exactly come of it all.
