I've been taking part in a fortnightly art challenge and some of the prompts have ended up leading to fanart. Apologies to those who've seen them on Flickr already.

Prompt: "A style or medium you've never used before"

Palette Knives and Impasto (Heavy Base Acrylic on Canvas Board)

A slightly more impressionistic finish than I'm used to, but still recognisably human at least.
I extend my apologies to Mr Cumberbatch for the unfortunate mauling of his profile.

Impasto

Prompt: "Overlay/Double-exposure"

Overlay (chalk & charcoal on book pages)

One of those weeks where the thing you thought you were going to do was thwarted at every turn so you wind up with the thing that opportunity just happened to throw in your path. In this case a 1970’s imprint of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Volume 12) that fell out of its binding and shed its pages across the floor.
Canon Holmes shares a little space and face-time with his most contemporary incarnation.

(And some associated papercut-related fiddling around.)

Nicely done! I particularly like the idea of Sherlock meeting the print version of his original incarnation.

Thanks :) That was more by accident than intent. I'd planned to do something totally non-fandom but then I couldn't find my printable acetate sheets and the tracing paper was all creased so I gave up and made fanart instead :p

These are all gorgeous, but I'm especially impressed by the first one. This is the first time you've worked in this medium? Amazing job for a first try! I'm not an artist, but I helped put one through college, so I know how difficult this is. **applause for all**

I've worked with acrylics before, but never with palette knives or any sort of Impasto technique. I'm more familiar with brushes (http://www.flickr.com/photos/unlikeyou/2197293517/in/set-72157600293723300/).

All works are so original and beautifully done. I asked an artist friend what 'impasto' meant and after he explained it to me I was even more impressed by the portrait! The Cumberdevil's profile looks great and is instantly recognizable; and speaking of recognizable how about those silouettes, wow! Good job!! But my favourite is the double entendre. So unusual and so clever. The drawing itself is really lovely.
Thank you for sharing!

Impasto is a sod, but kind of fun once you get going. Heavy on the paint though- you do pretty much layer it on with a trowel.

The first one is really something. But I love impressionist art. And it is recognizable as our Benedict. I especially think it's great since it was a new medium for you.

The book ones...wow. I love them. I want to take them for ice cream and a long walk on the beach.

Thank you so much for sharing these with us.

HA! Thanks. I'm sure they'd love to go for ice cream and beach walks, if only they weren't agonisingly brittle pulp-fiction 70s paper that tends to dissolve when it gets damp... XD

All of these are breathtaking. But "Canon Holmes shares a little space and face-time with his most contemporary incarnation." - I can't keep staring at it! Just inspired. So gorgeous.

the whole lot are quite entrancing; and the range of medium and styles are a delight as well. also loved *romance* from flickr li as well. while not directly fandom related the result of your subversion of the romantic cliche feels very sherlock does it not? am looking forward to seeing more of your work. :)

They are all beautiful. I love the pencil on book pages. I wish you could show it to the makers of Sherlock. I think it captures just what they are trying to do.

Found this through the sherlockbbc comm – as much as I enjoy all three, the silhouettes are absolutely my favorite: so recognizable, as others have noted, and something about the lightness of the touch of their hands. Their shapes as windows to the text is lovely, as a visual and as an idea – I mean, that is what the show is doing, with these actors and their physical presences, I had not thought of it that way before.
