Apr. 30th, 2010 06:26 pmFuck. Me.
Commute from your nightmares. Huge crash on the motorway, one person airlifted to hospital, four more by ambulance, closed two junctions and poured all the traffic riiiiiiiight through my route home. I work approximately 4 miles from my house. Do you know how long it took me to get home?
An hour and a quarter.
Jeebefeefsus queebed.
Though on the plus side, I did have plenty of time to figure out how the radio in my car works, and tune in some pre-sets, and decide that if I ever had an 80s dance troupe, they would have to be called "Hot Clutch" which is the overwhelming smell that still lingers about me from having the window cracked open. Oh. My. Fucking. God.
Given the speed with which the traffic was not-moving, I shaved about half an hour off I think, just by dint of taking a deeply circuitous route around some residential streets. Though if I'd known how bad it was I would have pulled off the main drag much earlier, taken the backroad to Sarah's and stopped there for a cup of tea and a piece of cake for a while until the craziness subsided.
Though I did almost ram into a twat in a Kia who evidently had no concept left of who has precident at a mini-roundabout. I am coming from your RIGHT, you arsehole, I GO FIRST. You GIVE WAY. *makes obscene hand gestures*

Date: 2010-04-30 06:23 pm (UTC)They are doing some major remodelling on M4 J11. Connie slips off to one side and down onto the motorway to head off to slough but I have to sit in the traffic going across and down the other side of the A33. They are doing all sorts of weird things to the A33, especially south of the M4, and ... well, the wors part is they have three lanes, only two of which are open and one of those closes where they have removed a roundabout!
Tell you, it is going to seriously bugger up everyone's sat-nav!

Date: 2010-04-30 07:50 pm (UTC)While my work was in Newbury, I commuted up and down the M4. Even living in Reading centre, J11 was still closest. Shortly after they started the "improvements" (incidentally, on the M4 itself they have narrow lanes and a 50 limit but no actual closures so far as I'm aware), there was a major crash Eastbound between 11 and 10 (Newbury being West of Reading, J10 being East of reading, for anyone unfamiliar with the geography of the Thames Valley) at about 5:00pm. By the time I got there the tailback was well past J12. I did the only thing possible and got off at 12, up the A4 and into town that way. Took four times as long to go those last five miles as to go the previous 20!
