If you ever wondered what it is that attracts people to the steampunk genre, it's pretty much this.

I defy you not to find a slightly insane, fascinating sort of beauty about it.

Science was more fun to look at in those days too (apologies for the doll reflection in the glass. The light is terrible in the train shed, it really is)

The Mallard and the above-pictured dynamometer car

And let's face it, who among us would not substantually prefer to travel in hand-carved and tapestried upholstery like this than the dismal plastic and nylon vandalism-proof rail interiors of today?

Even the smallest room is a delight.

And the mail train. Don't start me on the mail trains...
Or the royal trains for that matter. York's National Rail Museum has a substantial collection of royal rolling stock.
From Queen Charlotte's

To the rather bizarre and utilitarian offering from our own queen's post-war formica haven, which I didn't get pictures of cause it really was horrible inside, but there's a little bit of everything on show.

Including Queen Victoria's saloon car.

I cannot express how hard it is to take a flash photo through glass in the frickin' DARKEST engine shed in the known world. The blue satin really was an amazing colour and there were mounds of gold garving across the ceiling.
More contemporary, but...

Now that's how you put a bathroom in a train.

*happy historical sigh*

Date: 2010-01-13 05:20 pm (UTC)She was standing next to me, carrying said doll, and it was reflecting in the window of the dynamometer car I was taking the photo through. Cause you can't get IN the car, just peer through the windows.

Here's you and yours, contemplating a mini-train

Date: 2010-01-15 01:10 pm (UTC)Yes I love old trains the one used by John Ringling they were restoring was lovely but again hard to get a photo looking in the windows.
Yes I do love the old style. There was a club at my college that was made of old train cars kept in the old style. We loved to go there for dinner and drinks.
