NTM 14

If you ever wondered what it is that attracts people to the steampunk genre, it's pretty much this.

NTM 48

I defy you not to find a slightly insane, fascinating sort of beauty about it.

NTM 46

NTM 45

Science was more fun to look at in those days too (apologies for the doll reflection in the glass. The light is terrible in the train shed, it really is)

NTM 38

NTM 37

NTM 01

The Mallard and the above-pictured dynamometer car

NTM 49

And let's face it, who among us would not substantually prefer to travel in hand-carved and tapestried upholstery like this than the dismal plastic and nylon vandalism-proof rail interiors of today?

NTM 39

Even the smallest room is a delight.

NTM 30

NTM 31

And the mail train. Don't start me on the mail trains...

Or the royal trains for that matter. York's National Rail Museum has a substantial collection of royal rolling stock.

From Queen Charlotte's

NTM 65

To the rather bizarre and utilitarian offering from our own queen's post-war formica haven, which I didn't get pictures of cause it really was horrible inside, but there's a little bit of everything on show.

NTM 63

Including Queen Victoria's saloon car.

NTM 59

NTM 60

I cannot express how hard it is to take a flash photo through glass in the frickin' DARKEST engine shed in the known world. The blue satin really was an amazing colour and there were mounds of gold garving across the ceiling.

More contemporary, but...

NTM 54

Now that's how you put a bathroom in a train.

NTM 52

NTM 56

*happy historical sigh*

Wow. This is fantastic!

Incidentally, what *was* the doll? It looked, uh, dead.

The doll is one of [livejournal.com profile] gourami_tea's collection of Asian origina dolls-

Why was it in the museum?

It wasn't, she was carrying it around with her.

Yup...

She was standing next to me, carrying said doll, and it was reflecting in the window of the dynamometer car I was taking the photo through. Cause you can't get IN the car, just peer through the windows.

O.K. to me it looked like one of those dummies museums put in their displays to illustrate how people looked, and I thought maybe it was a reflection of an adjacent display.

Whoever's doll it is, Bunny's carrying it, I just noticed you can see his collar at the top right.

Are you sure it's not yours? Cause Charlie took Puck and the one in the reflection is in the wrong outfit for that.

Here's you and yours, contemplating a mini-train

On the subject of Victoriana, have you heard of Echo Bazaar? They were talking about it on Pods and Blogs and it sounds like a cross between Dark Victorian (possibly with steampunk elements) and Neverwhere. I haven't had time to look at it much beyond the splash page, but I thought of you immediately. :)

It appears to be some kind of twitter-related thing?
I've never heard of it. I shall have to look...

From: [identity profile] deke.livejournal.com
Yeah, it posts things to your Twitter feed, but they say it's not going to spam your Twitter feed and will only post when you say it's okay. Wish it said more about the actual game without having to sign up.

From: [identity profile] lady-t-220.livejournal.com
Yeah, so I see. How random. I think it may be mostly website-based, but with extraneous twitter-related doings.

Now, THOSE are real trains. Man the panels are so gorgeous and the engine! I would rather travel in one of those too. But frankly, the idea of how safety was in those trains...I prefer today's disc breaks to the block ones that were manual as well. *shudders*

Date: 2010-01-14 09:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lady-t-220.livejournal.com
Well yes, safety and speed are two big points in favour for modernity, but why can't one have modernity with *style*...?

I wanted to LIVE in those trains. *sigh*
Really though, thank you for coming with me and puting up with my geekyness. XD

Hey, you know I loves me some geekery. I may not squee over bullet trains but I can certainly flap with the best of them over victorian mail coaches... :p

Heee. bulit train is just good cuz its nice to sit in for hours, unlike ours XD
But yes, the mail coaches where made of WIN!! :D

Wow that's lovely....

I did see Holmes and I have to say I walked out saying it had a steampunk feel to it just missed the aeroships....

I love those trains THAT was traveling well...

Date: 2010-01-15 10:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lady-t-220.livejournal.com
Yeah, parts of Holmes certainly strayed a little sideways into the genre, the poison gas machine in particular.

I know trains these days are faster and safer, but goodness, they're just nowhere near as nice.

From: [identity profile] viewoftheworld.livejournal.com
Yes I wouldn't say it was a steampunk movie but rather one with a steampunk influence or feel.

Yes I love old trains the one used by John Ringling they were restoring was lovely but again hard to get a photo looking in the windows. Ringling private train car

Yes I do love the old style. There was a club at my college that was made of old train cars kept in the old style. We loved to go there for dinner and drinks.
