Van Helsing: A small controversy seems to be brewing over the Stephen Sommers film currently shooting in Prague. The movie is currently being shot in the center of Prague, in the famous St. Nicholas' Church, which is national cultural monument.
When the filmmakers asked for permission to shoot here, the permission was denied by the Ministry of Culture. However (according to the news stories), the filmmakers then approached the Prague Archdiecese which gave them the permission (although they had no authority to overrule the Ministry). Today, the Minister of Culture learned about the fact and went to inspect the church but he was not allowed to go inside for two hours! When he finally got inside (the News crews had to stay outside), he was outraged that the baroque benches, hundreds of years old, were removed, and there is heavy machinery inside the church. According to the minister, these facts are fragrant violations of all possible regulations. The minister promised "heavy fines and lawsuits for everyone involved".
*slaps head*
But in less distressing news...:
The Phantom of the Opera: ScreenDaily reports that Joel Schumacher is now set to direct the film version of the Weber musical. Shooting begins this Fall.
Which means Hugh should be safely ensconced on Broadway and avoiding Joel Schumacher like the plague.
Not that I wouldn't like to see him in the role. you see, I just have an intense paranoid fear of Schumacher's hand-of-death-awfulnes. In his enture career I have seen one film of his that I actually thought was good. That's not a very hope-inspiring track record.
I could be proved wrong of course, and find that movie musicals are a hidden talent of his and all the other things he's done were merely him "finding himself" before commencing on the work of a lifetime.
I doubt it of course, but in this world almost anything is possible.
