I'd been awaiting Chicago with a mixture of excitement (cause I'm a closet fan of musical things) and a certain sense of aprehension (just in case it sucked), but more recently with a certain air of furstration because I will admit that I was gunning for Hugh to be in the Richard Gere role.
After seeing it though... I'd have to say I can't really see him in the part. Though whether that's because he would have turned in a very different performance from Gere, or just because I couldn't picture it in my mind's eye I don't know.
At least Gere didn't do too bad a job of it all things considered. I would have still liked to see Hugh in the role just for my own personal enjoyment, though whether it would have been the best move for him is doubtful.
Only major thing of course is that I never really wanted to see Richard Gere in his underwear. That's one part of the movie I would have definitely prefered Hugh... MUWAHAH!
Whatever anyone says about Gere's performance though, at least it's a few thousand miles better than the footage of him in Grease all those many aeons back.

The musical numbers were sound though the start of the movie felt weak. A crime of passion seemed more like a small hiccup than anything else and it really didn't start to perk up until the Cell Block Tango, which was, I must say, really rather good.

Renee Zellweger did good, especially for someone new to the singing and dancing end of showbiz, though I felt she lost out when onscreen with Catherine Zeta-Jones who had a tendancy to steal the spotlight back in any musical scenes they performed together.
I figure that's just a side-effect of having done her fair share of genuine stage musicals though. It gave her an added spark to the dance numbers that Zellweger just didn't have.

Excellent though, was John C. Reilly as Amos. A small character by all accounts but you just had to feel for the poor bastard.

All in all, worth the price of admission though I don't know if I'll bother seeing it again till it comes out to rent.

And now I'm off to suck Wolvie's strawberry head.

Minds out of the gutter. I have a spin-pop Wolverine and I'm not afraid to use him. (ooo-er)
